You are right: peanuts are a legume (they belong to the same family as peas and beans) and not a true nut (sometimes called tree nuts to distinguish them from the peanut or groundnut). Being allergic to peanuts does not automatically mean that you will be allergic to other nuts, although some people do have both allergies. However, peanuts are often used as a cheap substitute for other more expensive nuts, as they can be washed to remove the peanut flavour and then treated so as to taste like something else – almonds, walnuts or Brazil nuts, for example. The nut inside your hazelnut chocolate may actually be a peanut! It is for this reason that you have been advised to avoid all nut products, although if all your tests to true nuts were negative, it would be safe for you to eat them provided you remove them from the shells yourself and therefore know exactly what you are eating.
